Mavrovo & Bigorski Monastery

National park peaks and a wood-carved wonder

Mavrovo is the country's biggest national park — a highland of beech forest, wolves and lynx, ski slopes and half-submerged history. In winter it is North Macedonia's main ski resort; the rest of the year it belongs to hikers, and to the drowned church of St. Nicholas, which rises from Mavrovo Lake whenever the water drops.

On the park's western edge, the Bigorski Monastery of St. John the Baptist holds one of the finest wood-carved iconostases in existence — a nineteenth-century masterpiece of walnut so detailed its makers carved themselves into it. Nearby, the stone village of Galičnik still hosts its famous traditional wedding every July.

Why travellers come here

Bigorski Monastery

The wood-carved iconostasis alone justifies the trip — a national treasure hidden in the Radika valley.

The sunken church

St. Nicholas at Mavrovo Lake, photogenically half-drowned since the lake was created.

Galičnik village

Stone houses stacked on a mountainside, famous for its July wedding festival and its cheese.

Four-season mountains

Skiing in winter, wildflower hiking in summer — the park changes completely with the calendar.

Getting there

Roughly two hours by road west of Skopje through the Radika valley. Tours usually combine the monastery, the lake and a village lunch.

Best time to visit

June to September for hiking, December to March for skiing. Visit in July to catch the Galičnik Wedding.
