St. Naum Monastery & Springs

10th-century monastery over crystal springs

At the southern end of Lake Ohrid, almost touching the Albanian border, the monastery of St. Naum has watched the lake since the 10th century. Its founder is buried inside the chapel, and tradition says that if you press an ear to the tomb you can still hear his heartbeat.

The real spectacle is behind the monastery: the springs of the Crn Drim river, where icy water rises through white sand into a pool so clear the rowboats above it look suspended in air. Peacocks patrol the grounds, and small beaches line the lake on either side.

Why travellers come here

The spring boat ride

Rowed boats drift over the upwellings of the Crn Drim springs — the clearest water most visitors will ever see.

The monastery church

A compact 10th-century church with layers of frescoes and the tomb of St. Naum himself.

Resident peacocks

The monastery's famous flock roams the courtyards and poses better than most tour groups.

Beaches at the border

Sandy coves near the source, with the Galičica slopes behind and Albania visible across the water.

Getting there

About half an hour south of Ohrid town by road, or arrive the scenic way — by boat across the lake. Most Ohrid day tours combine both.

Best time to visit

April to October. Summer adds swimming; early autumn keeps the springs' colours without the queues for the boats.
