Matka Canyon

Boat rides, cave of Vrelo, cliff monasteries

Half an hour from the capital, Matka Canyon is Skopje's escape hatch: a drowned limestone gorge where cliffs drop straight into green water. The lake — created by one of the region's oldest dams — winds between rock walls dotted with caves and medieval chapels.

Boats run from the canyon restaurant up to Vrelo Cave, whose underwater chambers rank among the deepest explored in Europe. Kayaks are the quieter way in, and a cliff-side path traces the whole lake for walkers, passing the medieval monastery of St. Andrew on the way.

Why travellers come here

Boat to Vrelo Cave

The classic trip: a slow ride between the cliffs ending inside a stalactite cave above astonishingly deep water.

Kayaking the gorge

Rent a kayak and take the canyon at your own pace — early mornings are glass-calm.

St. Andrew's Monastery

A 14th-century chapel with rare frescoes, sitting a few steps from the water.

The canyon trail

A ledge path above the lake for hikers — bring proper shoes and a head for heights.

Getting there

About thirty minutes by road from central Skopje. Most Skopje day tours pair Matka with the city; drivers on the platform also run direct transfers.

Best time to visit

April to October for boats and kayaks. Summer afternoons get busy — mornings are cooler and calmer on the water.
