Matka Canyon: The Complete Day-Trip Guide

Half an hour from Skopje, the Treska river disappears between limestone walls and the city noise stops dead. Matka is North Macedonia's easiest great day trip - which also means it rewards a little planning.
Getting there
From central Skopje it is a 30 to 40 minute drive; taxis are cheap on the way out but can be scarce for the return in the evening. Organised half-day trips solve the return problem and usually bundle the boat ticket. The city bus runs to Matka village but leaves a walk to the canyon entrance.
The boat to Vrelo Cave
The classic Matka experience: a small boat hums up the green water between the cliffs to Vrelo, one of the deepest underwater cave systems in Europe. The guided cave visit takes about twenty minutes among stalactites; the ride itself is the show. Boats run continuously in season, and the earlier you go, the calmer the water and the emptier the jetty.
Kayak, hike, or both
Kayak rental by the dam lets you set your own pace under the canyon walls - go morning or late afternoon when the light drops into the gorge. On foot, the trail along the right bank reaches St. Andrew's Monastery (14th century, frescoed) in minutes and continues as a ledge path with the river far below - proper shoes, no vertigo.
Combine all three and Matka fills a genuinely great six-hour day; add the drive and lunch by the water and it is a full one.
