One Perfect Day in Skopje

Skopje is a city of collisions - Ottoman bazaar against brutalist blocks against the statue-mania of the 2014 makeover - and that is exactly what makes a day here fun. Everything central is walkable.
Morning: the Old Bazaar side
Cross the 15th-century Stone Bridge early and get lost in the Old Bazaar while the shutters are opening - it is the largest Ottoman bazaar in the Balkans outside Istanbul, still working, not a museum piece. Have a burek and a macchiato, poke into the caravanserais and the Daut Pasha hammam gallery, then climb the ramp to Kale Fortress for the city panorama.
Afternoon: the monumental centre and Vodno
Recross to Macedonia Square for the full statue spectacle - love it or laugh at it, it photographs brilliantly - then take the Memorial House of Mother Teresa, born a few streets away. With energy left, ride up Mount Vodno: the cable car reaches the 66-metre Millennium Cross and a view that puts the whole valley in one frame.
