Tikveš Wine Country
Family cellars in Macedonia's oldest wine region
Tikveš is the country's wine heartland — a sun-baked basin around Kavadarci and Negotino where vines have grown since antiquity. The flagship is Vranec, a dark, structured red that locals will tell you needs lamb, night and no hurry.
The region runs from large historic cellars to family wineries where the owner pours, explains and refills without being asked. Harvest turns the whole basin festive, and the vineyard roads between villages make one of the easiest, most rewarding day trips from Skopje.
Why travellers come here
Vranec tastings
The signature Macedonian red at its source — from big-name cellars to garage-scale family producers.
Family wineries
Tastings that turn into lunches; the region's hospitality is as much the product as the wine.
Harvest season
September brings grape trucks, open cellars and festivals across the basin.
Lake Tikveš
A dramatic reservoir in the vine hills, with the cliff-top Polog Monastery reachable by boat.
Getting there
Kavadarci and Negotino sit about an hour and a half south of Skopje on the main Vardar corridor — easy as a guided day trip with tastings arranged.
Best time to visit
September for harvest energy; May, June and October for warm, quiet cellar visits.
