Tikves Wine Country: Tastings, Cellars and Harvest

An hour south of Skopje, the Tikves basin has been making wine for two and a half thousand years and today produces most of the country's bottles. It remains one of Europe's best-value serious wine regions - and one of its least crowded.

What you are tasting

The flagship is Vranec - 'black stallion' - a deep, dark red that handles oak beautifully and pairs with everything grilled. Alongside it: Kratosija (the local ancestor of Zinfandel), aromatic whites like Temjanika, and increasingly confident international varieties. Cellar-door prices routinely undercut Western Europe by half or more.

How visits work

The region centres on Kavadarci and Negotino, with estates ranging from monumental cellars lined with old-oak barrels to boutique family wineries where the winemaker pours. Tastings are relaxed and generous, usually paired with local cheese and ajvar; book estates a day or two ahead rather than walking in.

Because tastings and driving do not mix, the day works best with a driver or an organised trip from Skopje - typically two or three estates, lunch among the vines, and the drive home handled.

Harvest season

September into early October is the spectacle: picking crews in the rows, presses running, the smell of fermenting must everywhere. It is the single best time to visit - and the busiest for the wineries, so book earliest for harvest dates.
