North Macedonia in Seven Days: The Complete Route

Seven days is the magic number for North Macedonia: enough to do the capital, the lake, a mountain, ruins, and a wine region without ever feeling rushed. This route runs as a loop from Skopje and works in either direction.
Days one and two: Skopje and Matka Canyon
Day one is Skopje itself - Old Bazaar in the morning, Kale Fortress, the statue-packed centre, cable car up Vodno if the sky is clear. Day two, take the half-day out to Matka Canyon for the boat to Vrelo Cave and the monastery trail, and roll straight on toward Ohrid in the afternoon (two and a half hours by road).
Days three to five: Lake Ohrid
Three full days: the old town and Kaneo on foot, the boat day to St. Naum and the springs, and a wildcard - Bay of Bones and beaches, Galicica's ridge for the two-lakes view, or simply the slow version of town you rushed on day one. Ohrid rewards not hurrying.
Day six: Bitola and Heraclea
Cross the Galicica flank to Bitola, the old consular city with the Balkans' most elegant main street. Ancient Heraclea Lyncestis sits on its edge - Philip II's city, with a theatre and some of the finest floor mosaics in the region, usually shared with more birdsong than tourists. Sleep in Bitola or push on toward wine country.
Day seven: Tikves wine country, then home
The road back to Skopje runs through the Tikves basin - stop for a cellar tasting and a long lunch among the vines (your driver stays sober; that is what organised wine days are for). You reach Skopje by evening having crossed lake, mountain, antiquity, and vineyard in one week.
