Skopje Airport to Ohrid: Every Way to Get There

Ohrid is the reason most travellers fly into North Macedonia, but the airport sits 170 kilometres away on the other side of the country. There is no train, and public connections involve a transfer through Skopje's city bus station. Here is how the options actually compare.
Private transfer: door to door in under three hours
A private transfer is the option nearly every visitor lands on, and for good reason: your driver meets you in arrivals, the vehicle is air-conditioned, and you are at your Ohrid guesthouse roughly 2 hours 30 minutes later via the A2 motorway. Typical pricing runs 75 to 95 euro per vehicle (not per person), which for couples and families usually beats the combined cost and hassle of taxis plus intercity buses.
Book ahead rather than negotiating at the terminal - pre-booked drivers track your flight and wait through delays at no extra charge, and you know the price before you land.
The bus route: cheapest, slowest, with a catch
There is no direct bus from the airport to Ohrid. You first need the airport shuttle or a taxi into Skopje's main bus station (about 25 minutes), then an intercity coach to Ohrid - roughly 3 hours 30 minutes on the road, 8 to 12 euro per seat, several departures a day thinning out after early evening. Total realistic journey time from touchdown: five hours or more with waiting.
It works fine for solo travellers on a budget who land before mid-afternoon. Arriving on an evening flight, the maths shifts firmly toward a private transfer.
Rental car: freedom with caveats
The A2 to Ohrid is a modern, scenic motorway and renting gives you flexibility for day trips afterwards. Factor in tolls, parking limits in Ohrid's old town (much of it is pedestrianised), and that one-way rentals or after-hours pickups add fees. If Ohrid is your base and you plan trips to Galicica or St. Naum anyway, a car earns its keep; for a lake-focused stay, transfers plus local boats cover almost everything.

Two or more people, or any evening arrival: pre-book a private transfer. Solo on a tight budget with a morning arrival: the bus works. Either way, book the return leg early in peak season - August departures fill up.
