Three Days in Ohrid: The Itinerary That Covers It All

Ohrid earns both of its UNESCO listings - one for the lake, one for the town - and three days is the sweet spot: enough for the old town, a full boat day, and one wildcard. This plan orders the days so the walking happens in morning light and the swimming in afternoon warmth.
Day one: the old town, on foot, before the heat
Start at the Ancient Theatre by 9:00 while tour groups are still at breakfast. Climb through the old town's Ottoman houses to Tsar Samuel's Fortress for the full lake panorama, then descend via Plaosnik and its early-Christian mosaics to the postcard itself: St. John at Kaneo, on the cliff above impossibly blue water.
Lunch below Kaneo at the boardwalk, swim off the rocks, and finish with the icon gallery and a slow evening on the harbour front. A licensed guide turns this from a pretty walk into two thousand years of stories - the fortress, the schools that gave the Slavic world its alphabet, the 365 churches legend.
Day two: the boat day - St. Naum and the springs
Take the morning boat down the full length of the lake to St. Naum monastery, right on the Albanian border. The monastery church holds some of the finest frescoes in the region, resident peacocks patrol the grounds, and the real magic is behind it: the springs, where glass-clear water rises from the lakebed and small boats drift over it in silence.
Swim at the beaches beside the monastery before the boat back. Book the boat day ahead in July and August - afternoon departures sell out.
Day three: pick your wildcard
Option one: the Bay of Bones, a reconstructed prehistoric pile-dwelling settlement over the water, paired with beaches on the Gradiste peninsula. Option two: drive up Galicica National Park's serpentines for the ridge-top view of two lakes - Ohrid on one side, Prespa on the other - unforgettable at sunset. Option three, for photographers: a golden-hour session around Kaneo when the light does what it does.
